ROM is the sound of Matt Crum and Roberto Lange. The duo began their music in 2000 as a free improvisational group that would play multiple instruments and record hours of material that would later be worked over and over until a new form was made. This process has aligned the two to be streamlined in their sound and create a balance between studio and live performance. Matt Crum drums, guitars and bass’ on many recordings while Roberto records, electronics and mangles their joint idea’s.
Over the course of 9 years, ROM has been able to release one 7" "Crawl Upside Down" one 12" single “Into the Clouds” and Two Albums “Self-titled” and most recently “Foot Signal”. The road paved in this journey of music is a very detailed and implied one. There is a culmination of ideas on each of these records that tend to reflect the nature in which they were made.
The most recent album “Foot Signal” was the process of two years of recording in various studios. A constant stepping away from the material and revisiting allowed it to be fresh and made room for growth with each re-approach. The title “Foot Signal” talks about a very simple but effective way of communicating, using the slightest means, you can scuff your foot while walking behind someone to let them know you are there, or tap your foot to keep yourself and others in time. The album lends itself easy to early electronic tape music where edits and loops become the constant hypnotizing bed that begins to seep nuances of melodies and other not so conventional sounds. If Bruce Haack smoked weed with Lee Perry and let Conny Plank mix the record on a laptop in a plane, that's the feeling Foot Signal gives.
Matt Crum currently lives in the swamps of South Florida and Roberto Lange lives in the sewers of Brooklyn, both pursue individual projects that let the ROM group expand and implode with new ideas. -
